Year 9 marks the beginning of Stage 5, where you continue studying core subjects and choose electives that reflect your interests and strengths. These choices allow you to explore new areas of learning and begin shaping your future pathways.
Your learning across Year 9 and Year 10 contributes to the Record of School Achievement (RoSA), which is your official NESA credential at the end of Stage 5.

Course Description:
Agriculture provides students with the opportunity to learn about farming, food production, and environmental sustainability. Students work on the school farm and investigate plant and animal production systems.
The course combines practical farm activities with theoretical study exploring agricultural industries and sustainability.

Course Description:
The Child Studies course at Stage 5 provides students with knowledge and understanding of the physical, social, emotional, and intellectual development of children from infancy through early childhood. The course focuses on the roles and responsibilities of caregivers, the importance of nurturing environments, and the impact of health, nutrition, and safety on child development. Through practical activities and investigations, students explore theories of development, parenting skills, and the factors that influence children’s growth and wellbeing.
Aim:
The aim of the Child Studies course is to develop students’ appreciation and understanding of the needs and development of children, enabling them to make informed and responsible decisions about caregiving and child-related contexts. The course fosters skills in observation, communication, and problem-solving and encourages respect for diversity and the importance of supportive and nurturing environments for children’s optimal development.

Course Description:
By the end of Stage 5, students demonstrate knowledge and understanding of consumer, financial, economic, business, legal, political and employment matters. They analyse the rights and responsibilities of individuals in a range of contexts, and the role of law in society. Students develop skills in decision-making and problem-solving, related to a range of issues, and apply skills to construct plans designed to achieve a range of goals.
Students assess consumer, financial, economic, business, legal, political and employment information using research and communication skills. Through the investigation of contemporary issues, students work independently and collaboratively to meet individual and collective goals. They develop knowledge of civics and skills for citizenship, and recognise the importance of being an informed, responsible and active citizen.
Students appreciate the importance of ethical and socially responsible behaviour, and fundamental rights, rules and laws that promote fairness, justice and equity in society.
Aim:
The aim of the Commerce 7–10 Syllabus is for students to:
- stimulate an interest in how society operates in consumer, financial, economic, business, legal, political and work contexts

Course Description:
The Stage 5 Dance Course explores dance as a unique and expressive form of human movement that communicates ideas and reflects cultural and societal contexts. It fosters creativity, imagination, critical thinking, and self-expression through the study of performance, composition, and appreciation. Students develop technical skills, safe dance practices, and an understanding of dance as both a process and a product. The course includes the exploration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dance alongside Australia's multicultural dance heritage. It encourages students to appreciate diverse cultural perspectives, promotes well-being, and nurtures empathy and social engagement, making dance accessible and meaningful for all learners.
Aim:
The aim of the Dance 7–10 Syllabus is to:
- provide for the physical, creative and intellectual development of students
- engage students through the study of the Performance, Composition and Appreciation of Dance
- contribute to students' aesthetic, artistic and cultural education
- provide the means for students to express and communicate ideas through dance.
Studying Stage 5 Dance can open up a variety of career and further education opportunities for students. These include pathways to becoming a professional dancer, choreographer, dance teacher, or working in arts administration, production, and event management. Students may also pursue roles in dance therapy, fitness instruction, stage management, media and communications within the performing arts industry, as well as careers in nutrition and physiotherapy, supporting the health and well-being of dancers and other performers. Additionally, dance fosters valuable skills such as teamwork, creativity, discipline, and confidence, supporting success in a range of employment sectors and lifelong learning.

Excursions:
Excursions during the Stage 5 Dance Course include performing at the Hawkesbury City Eisteddfod and attending professional dance company performances such as those by Bangarra Dance Theatre, Australian Ballet, or Sydney Dance Company, while incursions provide opportunities for students to perform at events like Colo's MADD showcase and other in-school performances as they arise.
Equipment Required:
Students in the Stage 5 Dance Course need a 128-page exercise book or an A4 book for classwork and journaling, form-fitting dancewear such as black leggings, appropriately sized bike shorts paired with a leotard, singlet, or t-shirt, or Colo sports t-shirt; additionally, hair must be tied back off the face for all practical lessons.
Course Description:
The Year 9 & 10 Drama course offers students the opportunity to channel their imagination into action within the Drama space. Through exploring, enacting, and interpreting real and imagined people, worlds, and experiences, students deepen their understanding of the world. The course includes improvisational games, group and individual performance development, exploration of mime and physicality, voice techniques, and script interpretation for workshops and performances. Students will learn and apply the Elements of Drama through making, performing, and appreciating dramatic works.
Aim:
- To develop skills in character creation through physicality and voice.
- To enhance collaborative skills through group work.
- To learn written response techniques explaining playwrights’ meaning and intent.
- To gain experience in interpreting scripts and creating coherent performances.

Food Technology focuses on food preparation, nutrition, and food safety. Students develop practical cooking skills while learning about healthy food choices and food production.

Course Description:
Graphics Technology at Stage 5 introduces students to the fundamental principles and applications of graphical communication. Course Description:
Year 9
This course focuses on intensive skill development through the exploration of intriguing case studies. Students will enhance critical thinking, presentation, analytical, and problem-solving skills by investigating historical events that lack consensus regarding their causes. The focus is on understanding human motives and proposing logical alternative scenarios for unresolved cold cases across various times and places.

Year 10
Building on Year 9 skills, this course deepens understanding of power dynamics by examining the establishment and maintenance of power and control in ancient and modern societies. They also apply sociological and anthropological theories to deconstruct cultural rituals, traditions, and folklore.

Course Description:
Industrial Technology Construction focuses on building and construction skills used in the housing and construction industry. Students learn how structures are designed, set out, and built using a range of materials and tools.
The course includes practical projects alongside theory covering construction methods, materials, and safety practices.

The aim of the Industrial Technology: Building & Construction course is to develop students' skills and understanding of building and construction technologies, preparing them for further study or employment in the construction industry. This course introduces students to metalworking and engineering processes used in modern industry. Students design and create projects using a range of metal tools, machines, and fabrication techniques.

Course Description:
Industrial Technology Timber focuses on the design and construction of quality timber projects. Students develop skills in measuring, marking out, cutting, shaping, and assembling timber using both traditional hand tools and modern machinery.
Students learn about timber materials, sustainable forestry practices, and furniture construction techniques while producing practical projects in the workshop.

Course Description:
Stage 5 languages aim to empower students to engage meaningfully with speakers of the language and to appreciate linguistic and cultural diversity.
In Years 9 and 10 of language learning within the NSW curriculum, students further develop their communication skills in Japanese and deepen their understanding of the language and culture. Students learn to communicate more confidently and fluently, using a broader range of vocabulary and structures to express ideas, opinions, and experiences in increasingly complex and authentic contexts.
Aim:
- Enhancing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in the language.
- Developing intercultural understanding by exploring comparisons between cultures.
- Applying language skills to real-world situations, preparing for lifelong learning, travel, work, or further study.

- Students in Year 9 participate in an excursion to the city for a Japanese lunch and cultural experience.
- Year 10 students may have the opportunity to attend a 12-day study tour, including visiting our sister school and immersing themselves in Japanese culture.

Multi-Media at Stage 5 provides students with knowledge and skills related to various forms of digital media production, including graphic design, video, animation, sound, and interactive media. The aim of the Multi-Media course is to equip students with creative and technical skills in digital media production, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. The course prepares students for further studies or careers in fields such as graphic design, digital communication, film, animation, and interactive media by encouraging innovation, collaboration, and the responsible use of technology.

Course Description:
The Stage 5 Music Course explores music as a powerful form of personal and cultural expression that connects identities, communities, and histories worldwide. Students engage in performing, composing, and appreciating diverse musical styles, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander music and the rich influences within Australian music. Through singing, playing instruments, improvising, and analysing music, students develop musical literacy, creativity, and a deeper understanding of cultural and aesthetic values. This course supports intellectual growth, emotional expression, and the development of skills that are transferable to many pathways and professions.
Aim:
The aim of the Music 7–10 Syllabus is to:
- enable students to develop musical knowledge, skills and literacies for active engagement, to become thoughtful and creative musicians
- provide the means for students to experience the creative process as an individual, and in collaboration with others, through performing, listening and composing
- contribute to students’ aesthetic, artistic and cultural education and enjoyment
- develop a lifelong sense of wonder and curiosity about and engagement with music.
Stage 5 Music students can explore a wide range of career and further education opportunities, including becoming a performer, composer, music teacher, sound engineer, music therapist, or working in arts administration and event management. Opportunities also exist in music production, media and communications, songwriting, and conducting. Studying music fosters valuable skills such as creativity, teamwork, critical thinking, and confidence, which can support success in various fields, including the broader creative and entertainment industries.

Students pay a course fee of $35.00 in Year 9 and $35.00 in Year 10.
Excursions:
Excursions during the Stage 5 Music Course may include opportunities to perform at Education Week performances, the Hawkesbury Eisteddfod, and to attend live music shows, while incursions provide students with chances to perform at events such as Colo's MADD showcase and other in-school performances as they arise.
Equipment Required:
Students use a laptop with headphone capabilities to access Google Classroom, and booklets covering the Elements of Music and Music Theory are provided. While musical instruments are available for use at school, students are encouraged to have their chosen instrument at home for regular practice.
Course Description:
Photography 200 is a two-year, hands-on elective that builds students’ skills in both analogue (film and darkroom) and digital photography. Students learn how to capture, manipulate, and communicate ideas through images while exploring both traditional and contemporary photographic practices. With instruction across a range of devices and workflows, students develop confidence to take strong photographs and, just as importantly, learn to see the world in a new way.
The course enables students to investigate a variety of themes, including still life, portraiture, the built environment, and moments in time. Throughout the program, students study historical influences, key photographers, and evolving techniques, while also examining current imaging trends. By connecting past developments with today’s technologies and approaches, students gain insight into how photography has evolved over time and how photographers shape the way we understand and interpret the world.

- Encourage creative thinking and personal expression.

Fees:
Students pay a course fee of $120.00 in Year 9 and $120.00 in Year 10.
This cost includes consumable materials such as darkroom chemicals, negative film, and photographic paper, as well as access to studio equipment and an individual SD card.
The course also includes some small-format printing/enlargements of digital images in the overall costs; however, students will need to purchase additional image prints. These can be ordered in small batches from Officeworks or via online suppliers for each unit they complete.

Course Description:
Students engage in a wide range of physical activities to develop key understandings about how and why we move, as well as how to enhance the quality and enjoyment of movement. They are encouraged to participate in new and diverse sports, allowing them to apply their skills and thinking in different ways. Physical Activity and Sports Studies (PA&SS) provides students with an interest in physical activity the opportunity to deepen their knowledge and skills beyond the compulsory PDHPE course.
Approximately half of the course is devoted to practical activities, providing students with hands-on opportunities to develop skills and apply their learning.
At Colo, PA&SS can be studied as either a 100-hour (1-year) course or a 200-hour (2-year) course.

Students are required to wear the Colo High School PDHPE sport uniform and appropriate footwear for practical lessons.
Additionally, students should bring classroom equipment such as an exercise book, stationery, and a laptop.
Course Description:
Textiles Technology at Stage 5 offers students practical and theoretical knowledge about textiles, fabric construction, and design. The course explores fibre types, textile production methods, fabric manipulation, and fashion and textile design principles. Students develop skills in creating textile products through techniques such as sewing, dyeing, printing, and embellishment. Emphasis is placed on creativity, innovation, sustainable practices, and understanding the role of textiles in society and culture.
Aim:
The aim of the Textiles Technology course is to develop students’ skills in textile design and production, fostering creativity and a critical understanding of textiles and their applications. The course prepares students for further studies or careers in fashion, textiles, and related industries by encouraging practical problem-solving, technical skills, and awareness of sustainability in the textile industry.

Course Description:
Visual Arts is a dynamic two-year elective where you get to think creatively, take risks, and develop your own artistic voice.
In this course, you won’t just “make art” — you’ll explore big ideas, experiment with different materials, and learn how artists communicate meaning about the world around them. You’ll investigate everything from influential movements like Impressionism and Cubism to bold contemporary and postmodern practices, discovering how artists challenge ideas, tell stories, and respond to society.
You’ll work hands-on across a wide range of artmaking forms, including painting, drawing, printmaking (such as lino, monoprint, and etching), and mixed media. There’s a strong focus on experimentation — trying new techniques, combining materials, and pushing your ideas further.
Throughout the course, you’ll explore engaging themes like:
- place and environment — from landscapes to urban spaces and connections to Country
- the human figure — including portraiture, identity, and emotion
- modern and contemporary art practices

Aim:
The aim of Visual Design is to enhance students’ understanding and application of visual communication, encouraging them to think critically and creatively to solve design challenges. The course prepares students for further study and career pathways in design and related creative industries.
Visual Design opens pathways to diverse creative industries such as graphic design, advertising, digital media, industrial design, fashion design, and architecture. The skills developed in this course also provide a strong foundation for further study in creative arts and design-related fields.

The Cafe Skills & Barista course at Stage 5 provides students with practical knowledge and skills related to the hospitality industry, focusing on café operations, barista techniques, and customer service. Students learn about coffee preparation, equipment operation, hygiene standards, and safe work practices. Through hands-on experience, they develop skills in beverage making, food handling, and workplace communication. The course emphasises teamwork, time management, and professionalism in a café environment.
Aim:
The aim of the Cafe Skills & Barista course is to prepare students with foundational skills and knowledge for employment or further training in the hospitality and café industry. The course fosters practical barista skills, customer service excellence, and an understanding of workplace health and safety, promoting confidence and responsibility in hospitality settings.

Teachers aim to take students on one excursion throughout the year where possible to complement the course content.
Each student is expected to participate in a series of incursions during class time or after school at negotiated events, to work in the Colo Café, and gain 20 hours' worth of work experience throughout the year.

You will also have the chance to showcase your work at events like the Art Food Festival, creating not just artworks, but stories told through clay. With all materials provided, including clay, glazes, and firing, this course offers an exciting, creative journey that will appear as a fully graded 100-hour subject on your Year 10 ROSA. The Ceramics course aims to develop students’ practical skills and creative confidence in working with clay through a variety of hand-building techniques. Course Description:
This 100-hour Commerce course provides students with a strong foundation in legal knowledge and practical life skills, with a particular focus on core legal topics from the NSW Commerce syllabus. Students explore how laws are made, applied and changed, and develop an understanding of their rights and responsibilities as informed and active citizens.
The course also incorporates key elements of financial literacy, equipping students with the knowledge and skills to manage money, make informed financial decisions, and understand consumer rights. In addition, students engage in an elective focus area, studying either Running a Business or Travel, allowing them to apply their learning in real-world contexts.
Aim:
- The aim of this course is to develop students’ understanding of the role of law and financial decision-making in society and to build their capacity to think critically about real-world issues. Students will develop the skills to interpret legal and financial information, apply knowledge to everyday situations, and make informed decisions as responsible and financially capable citizens.
- The course also aims to foster confidence in navigating everyday contexts, including consumer rights, employment, personal finance, and enterprise or travel-related decision-making.

Course Description:
This elective introduces students to the creative world of digital film and photography. Students explore how images and videos are used to tell stories, communicate ideas, and shape the way we see the world.
In Digital Film, students create stop-motion animations and short films, including documentaries and social media-style content. They learn how to plan, film, and edit their work using digital tools.
In Digital Photography, students develop camera skills and explore composition, lighting, and editing. They create photographic series that capture people, places, and ideas, including portraiture that explores identity and belonging.
Students also investigate the work of contemporary artists such as PES and Brandon Stanton and learn how to analyse and interpret visual media.

Course Description:
This course is designed for students passionate about Mathematics or those wishing to extend their mathematical capabilities. It offers an engaging exploration of matrices, geometry, and various advanced problem-solving techniques. Learning activities include individual and group problem-solving exercises, discussions, interactive simulations, and participation in the AMT Enrichment Program. Emphasis is placed on developing communication and teamwork skills alongside strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills to prepare students for higher-level Stage 6 Mathematics courses.

- To introduce fundamental concepts and operations in matrices and their applications.
- To explore various branches of geometry, including Euclidean, projective, and non-Euclidean geometries.
- To engage with the AMT Gauss Enrichment Program, developing skills in similarity, congruence, Pythagoras’ theorem extensions, spreadsheets, and Diophantine equations.
- To study Pascal’s Triangle and Combinatorics, including binomial expansions, number theory, and the Fibonacci sequence.
- To investigate fractals through Sierpinski’s Triangle and their broader applications.

The Paddock to Plate course at Stage 5 explores the journey of food from its source in agriculture to its final presentation on the plate. Students examine the processes involved in growing, harvesting, processing, preparing, and serving a variety of foods. The course integrates concepts from agriculture, food technology, and nutrition, with an emphasis on sustainable practices, seasonal produce, and local food systems. Practical activities include working with fresh ingredients, understanding supply chains, and preparing meals using farm-to-table principles.
Aim:
The aim of the Paddock to Plate course is to develop students’ understanding of the connections between agriculture, food production, and culinary arts. The course encourages appreciation of sustainable and ethical food practices, and equips students with skills in food sourcing, preparation, and presentation. It also aims to foster respect for producers and awareness of the environmental and cultural impacts on food choices.

Course Description:
Students engage in a wide range of physical activities to develop key understandings about how and why we move, as well as how to enhance the quality and enjoyment of movement. They are encouraged to participate in new and diverse sports, allowing them to apply their skills and thinking in different ways. Physical Activity and Sports Studies (PA&SS) provides students with an interest in physical activity the opportunity to deepen their knowledge and skills beyond the compulsory PDHPE course.
Approximately half of the course is devoted to practical activities, providing students with hands-on opportunities to develop skills and apply their learning.
At Colo, PA&SS can be studied as either a 100-hour (1-year) course or a 200-hour (2-year) course.
